Financial market returns and their volatility['" have the utmost importance when investors, business managers, politicians and academics make decisions that impact a company's future financial health or the well-being of a nation's economy and its citizens. Based on stock shares returns and their volatility, businessmen and financial professionals make investment decisions that impact industries. When making these important decisions, there are unforeseen exogenous events - events that happen outside of the United States and are not directly related to a financial decision - that can create catastrophic damage to the financial sector of the United States. These events can cause a realized loss of billions or even trillions of dollars. Exogenous events can instantly cripple a nation's economy by causing businesses to fail, causing shareholders a lot of money, or eradicating consumer confidence.

The Chinese government has steadily increased its interest in Africa, where China's investments in infrastructure and in extraction of valuable resources have allowed it to exert political influence. This paper analyzes the reasons why China has been so active on the continent and the methods they have used to become such an important actor in the area.

During the early and mid-twentieth century, only the wealthy class could consume fashion in mass quantities due to the cost of clothing. The lower and middle classes were limited in their consumption which created a demand for lower-priced clothes. They too wanted to mimic the idea of wealth through mass consumption and mirror the wealthy class. Zara, a well-known Spanish fashion company, saw an opportunity to profit from the middle and lower classes. Zara sought out to create fashion that was affordable, profitable, and disposable. They wanted lower social classes to have the ability to treat fashion as disposable and to "keep up" with the latest trends. This was when the Zara model was created which is now known as "Fast Fashion".

The problems of human and environmental well-being are inseparable. In order to protect both, we must understand and target the relationship between the two. Biodiversity is a crucial component of ecosystem health, yet as we degrade land, we undermine and disrupt biodiversity. Though research about the relationship between biodiversity and poverty is still new, there are key clear overlaps between the two-most often, areas of high biodiversity exist in low-income rural areas that experience high poverty. 1 Agriculture contributes to this relationship-it is one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss yet is a crucial system on which rural communities in lower income countries depend. Most often, the economies of these countries depend on natural resources;2 therefore, when we degrade the latter through development, we threaten lives and livelihoods. Sustainable development is the organizing principle by which we can meet human development goals while simultaneously supporting the ability of the natural environment to sustain the ecosystem services on which society, culture and economies depend3

Phannaceutical advertisements have been regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1962, originally used as a method to influence physician-prescribing behavior. Since then, phannaceutical advertisements have expanded to various channels of communication by way of a marketing strategy known as direct-to-consumer advertising (DTC or DTCA). Through this practice, companies can advertise medical products directly to consumers as long as certain instructions are followed. However, companies in the pharmaceutical industry took advantage of relaxed FDA laws in 1997 and rapidly grew in the DTCA market. Though legal actions have been proposed to better regulate DTC advertising, the phannaceutical industry seems to rarely be affected, leaving room for suggestions as to how the FDA and policymakers can rethink DTC policies moving forward.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder causing stiffness, tremors, and dementia. Inherited PD has been linked to mutations in PINKI and Parkin, proteins involved in the clearance of damaged mitochondria. These proteins signal degradation of Miro, an integral protein of the motor adaptor complex. The halting of mitochondrial trafficking prevents depolarized organelles from spreading reactive oxygen species, which cause oxidative damage to membranes, DNA, and proteins. Both Miro degradation by PINKliParkin and formation of myosin-VI mediated F -actin cages have been shown to occur around damaged mitochondria. How these two processes work together to decrease mitochondrial motility is not yet fully understood. We hypothesized that F-actin is responsible for stopping mitochondrial motion before Miro can be degraded.

According to the United Nations High Commission of Refugees (UNHCR), there were 20.4 million refugees worldwide under UNHCR mandate in 2018. Thus, in 2019 Pew Research Center noted that the number of global refugees was at its highest level since the end of World War II. A variety of push factors, including climate change, genocide, political crisis, and economic instability have contributed to the worldwide increase in refugees. This problem of international scope creates a variety of challenges, as policymakers work to allocate their limited resources in a manner that is both cost effective and humanitarian. The purpose of this paper is to investigate what can be learned from German and American resettlement policies about the most time- and cost-efficient ways to ensure economic integration of refugees.

As a first-generation American descending from a village just north of Damascus, Frank Maria (b. 1913) dedicated his life to increasing understanding of the Arab world. Maria was a leading Arab-American spokesperson that regularly found himself in the company of United States officials and Presidents to urge for peace in his former home. Zaid Alnasar and his family sought asylum after being forced to flee Deraa, Syria and were granted admission into the United States in 2014 after 18 months of waiting. The Alnasars have brought with them their traumas of war, but there is no love lost for the land they once called home. While the place Maria's parents and the Alnasar family left is the same nominally and regionally, there is a marked shift on how each view their place of origin and themselves within it. Syria, at the time of Maria's birth only existed as an idea, one fashionable of the time, to fit within a larger Ottoman state. The empire collapsing was an event that few foresaw. By the time the Alnasar's left Syria, the nation was embroiled in a civil war in the name of political and civil rights against a government that had actively repressed the society for half a century. Though they left the same territory, each left different worlds.

Across a multiplicity of philosophical areas-philosophy of human nature, mind, politics, and more-one subject that proves significant again and again is altruism. Serving as a justification for or against many of the most basic aspects of our social institutions, our belief or disbelief in it is not inconsequential. Despite what egoists might say, altruism is a central facet of the human condition; we are all, in one way or another, altruistic. This includes what I will call fairness altruism, as well as a compassion altruism. Advancements in psychology have shown the development of these tendencies in infants & toddlers. In this paper, I will motivate a new altruism that considers our political nature and the mental mechanism that got us here.

Is it possible to build relationships with people without meeting them? The concept of parasocial relationships, or one-sided audience relationships with media figures, suggests that we often engage in this behavior. Politicians have long harnessed the power of parasocial relationships to win votes and the public's respect. Parasocial relationships and celebrity have become especially intertwined during the past three presidential administrations, contributing to each president's election to varying degrees. A significant example is the election of Donald Trump, who dominated mass media as well as Twitter. Additionally, the professionalization of political communication has complicated parasocial relationship formation. With more and more politicians outsourcing the management of their social media, it becomes more difficult for audiences to trust politicians' online presence as authentic. The purpose of this study is to further define the extent to which Twitter-mediated parasocial relationships influence the way college-aged users navigate politics.

The Syrian civil war is one of the most devastating conflicts that the world has ever seen. It seemingly has shown no sign of ending peacefully, and it is with that problem, that this research attempts to contribute. This paper argues that factors of identity, power and group interaction are vital in determining a successful conflict resolution, however, due to the unique and complex power dynamics of the Syrian civil war, successful conflict resolution is inapplicable in the short term. To answer the first part of the research question, the work situates itself within the greater body of conflict resolution literature. It then examines cases and measures their conflict resolution outcome as successful, moderately successful, and unsuccessful. Then, taking a case of each outcome, it will show support for assumptions related to each of the independent variables. To answer the second question, the discussion is transitioned to Syria, and the support for the assumptions will show support for the thesis.

Inequality of subjects to teach/learn led me to investigate not only the importance of incorporating inquiry-based science learning into everyday academics, but more importantly the impact that science teachers can have on students' abilities to see themselves as scientists. To guide my questions, I began researching the importance of classroom contexts that teachers strategically create and how those can set students up for success.

As teachers, we know that our students are the heartbeat of our classrooms and the basis of our instructional decisions. This project seeks to take that notion and apply it to literacy instruction at the elementary level. Our students deserve to have books that reflect themselves and their experiences, as well as books that broaden their world view. When inclusive and culturally relevant texts are integrated into the curriculum, teachers have the opportunity to foster empathic readers who better understand the world around them. This curriculum design project focuses on how elementary teachers can integrate inclusive and culturally relevant texts into their classroom libraries and literacy instruction through frameworks for critically evaluating texts, as well as a comprehensive curriculum plan. Another facet of the project focuses on how the inclusion of culturally relevant texts affects reading engagement.

Neurodegenerative diseases are incurable conditions that develop when neurons, the cells of the central nervous system (eNS), function abnormally, often causing apoptotic cell death. One major precursor for neurodegenerative diseases is oxidative stress, which occurs when the body's antioxidant defense mechanisms become overwhelmed by high concentrations of free radicals. As a result, transition metals, such as zinc and copper, are liberated from their intracellular stores. Previous studies suggest that zinc liberation is responsible for oxidative stress-induced apoptotic cell death and neurodegeneration. However, the role of copper liberation was still unclear. In this study, we aimed to confirm that zinc, not copper, is the primary transition metal responsible for mediating apoptotic cell death pathways in neurons.

In the wake of the latest wave of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, Black Americans have noticed an oversaturation of Black trauma films being circulated for outgroup members to better understand the movement. Black people have taken to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction with racial trauma being the only form of representation in film. A textual analysis was done of 76 tweets and analyzed in conjunction with the responses from four interviews to theorize the overall aversion to this type of content and what Twitter as a platform does for this conversation. The grounded theory method produced 107 idea units, 8 codes, and 3 broader themes. Twitter affords Black users visibility and the ability to discuss film representation in a cultural forum. There was a prominent concern from the ingroup that white/outgroup perception of Black Americans are being influenced by these types of films. Black people wish to dismantle the idea of a Black monolith, and by resisting these depictions of racial trauma ultimately reform the stories being told about Black people by a predominantly white film industry.

As settlement on the other side of the Atlantic became practicable, other European nations began to explore the continent for themselves. These nations viewed the New World as an economic opportunity, as it would greatly profit their nations and increase their range of power. This economic wealth was made through the planting and selling of cash crops that were in high demand on the other side of the Atlantic. The introduction of tobacco and sugar had greatly changed the economy of the Atlantic world. This growing demand led to a need for labor, as other sources of labor dried up due to the grueling and laborious work. Many colonists were often discouraged as they did not yield enough raw materials to quickly make large profits. Europeans were determined to make a profit and contribute to their country's growing wealth. Leaders looked to forced labor as a solution to this issue, due to its advantageous lead to profits in previous colonies in the West Indies. They began to look to West Africa as an answer to their labor problems.

This study investigates how effect teaching during the pandemic can provide insight into the fundamentals of effective education in general. To draw these conclusions, the Emmanuel College education department, served as the focus group. To collect data on both the students and professors in the education department, surveys, classroom observations, and interviews were conducted. Clear patterns emerged from the data that highlight the similar priories and values of those in education. The study produces a list of the most effective teaching practices and strategies found during the pandemic. The most relevant findings can be categories into 6 main elements of effective education that prove to be important bother during the pandemic and beyond. This gives implications of best teaching practices and strategies moving forward.

Current literature indicates that there are generational differences in career/work values (Twenge et aI., 2010). The present study investigated the career/work values of emerging and established adults and whether there were significant differences between their values. We aimed to understand if emerging adults had career/work values that were intrinsically motivated and promoted change more than established adults. We also aimed to understand if established adults had career/work values that were extrinsically motivated and promoted growth more than emerging adults. Participants (N~526) were collected via an online survey where they used the Munster Work Value Measure (MWVM) to rate different career/work values on a scale from 1 to 5. Results indicated that there were no significant differences in the career/work values of emerging and established adults. Overall emerging and established adults reported having balance between their career/work values.

The United States has a long history of racism, originating with the institution of slavery and the exploitation of black individuals. Americans, especially white Americans, seem to have differing beliefs about the legacy of slavery and how it continues to impact black Americans (Horowitz, Brown, and Cox, 2019). To understand why these differences occur, we must examine how slavery is being taught to American students. Through content analysis, this study examines how the social studies curriculum standards of Massachusetts and South Carolina compare in how they represent the institution of slavery and the racist policies that emerged during the Reconstruction Era, and whether the standards connect slavery and its aftermath to racial injustice in the present day. Analysis found that Massachusetts describes slavery in broader terms than South Carolina by connecting more institutions and industries to slave labor, though neither state explains the role of race in the institution of slavery. Massachusetts and South Carolina largely ignore or obfuscate the violence and exploitation experienced by enslaved people, and both states fail to connect slavery to modern-day racial injustice. This paper will discuss the implications of my findings and recommendations for future research on the American education system.

As the role of automation and new teclmologies continues to playa necessary role in the delivery of patient care, there is a growing need to improve their integration into the healthcare industry. The benefits of these new iIlllovations are clear, however the process of integrating their use amongst healthcare providers and their patients may not be as simple. The use of automation can be seen throughout the healthcare industry, from virtual telehealth visits supplementing in person care to automated record sharing between healthcare professionals. One area in particular that has provided tremendous advancements to the way in which health is monitored has been the use of wearable health teclmology. These can be fOlllld in many different forms including smart watches, patches, and smart rings which can be integrated nearly seamlessly into patients' lives. They are able to track health data in real time allowing users to make healthier life decisions and identify health issues in real time. Despite the many benefits surrollllding these advancements, there are bamers limiting the ease of their integration with specific demographics. Certain groups such as elderly and child patients may feel intimidated due to a lack ofllllderstanding ofteclmology that may be new to them. There are also growing concerns sUfrollllding the privacy of data collected and stored by new healthcare teclmology such as wearables. Therefore, the need for more efficient and effective integration strategies is greater than ever. It was fOlllld that the use of clear and easy to follow visuals which show the teclmology being used both in real life as well as graphically on a molecular level increase a patient's receptiveness to new teclmologies. Additionally, there was a clear consensus that integration begins with the employees of health care systems, those who will be delivering the care and reconunendations to the patient. This research will provide a framework for the most effective integration strategies for healthcare automation.

The population network of a group of Yellowstone elk was investigated to make inferences on how their unique partial migration pattern affects an arising mutation's probability of fixation in the population. A stochastic model was developed for population dynamics from survival and reproduction to migration across habitats and seasons. A mutant allele was then introduced into the population with reproduction rate r. Through simulations in R, it was found that a mutation arising in an adult during the summer season in node 1 is the most likely to fix for beneficial (r > 1) cases. For all circumstances with deleterious mutations (r < 1), the fixation probability is almost surely o. The branching process was used to calculate fixation probabilities of a well-mixed population. It was found that beneficial mutations arising in both adults and newborns in the elk population have lower fixation probabilities than those in a well-mixed population. Therefore, we can infer that the elk's partial migration pattern affects the likelihood of mutation fixation and serves as a suppressor of selection.
